From a Former Marine

PLEASE BE PATIENT, KIND, UNDERSTANDING AND ASSERTIVE…

Before the presidential election in America, I offered the BELOW POST. Since then, Trump has been elected and sad events have occurred: the triumphant religious groups have been thrilled…and others who lead them have remained silent when the marginalized who they should have helped have been hurt…and hurt deeply, young people have been shown that women can be treated as objects, emphasis has not been placed on what the poor need (which is what Judaism, Christianity, Buddhism and other major religions emphasized)…and not how the rich are benefiting from their being excluded), and other awful things have happened.

You may ask, “How could those who voted for someone who is a character disordered sociopath continue to believe this and defend it?

What we all need to see is that a resistance can’t be taken on directly. If you do, you will lose. People prefer ignoring the truth rather than opening themselves to the truth. After all, look how religious leaders still support Trump and others who supported him have not swayed from doing so.

Don’t be discouraged. Do what you can (which is wonderful), remember others who are seeking to do the same…and believe that God and other good souls who walk with you, will make a difference.

All will be well…I will never give up.

BELOW IS THE ORIGINAL POST:

“I DIDN’T KNOW!”

I don’t know much about politics. There are much better persons to consult about that arena of society.

However, I do know psychology—especially my specialties: resilience, maintaining a healthy perspective and leadership skills. I have spoken on these topics at Harvard, Yale, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, on Capitol Hill, the Air Force Academy, and in 20 different countries. I have had to debrief relief workers evacuated from Rwanda after their bloody genocide, worked in Cambodia after the Khmer Rouge were pushed north, in Lebanon with caregivers brought there from Aleppo, Syria for me to speak to them through an Arabic interpreter, and in other difficult, difficult situations.

If persons such as Nikki Haley and Kamala Harris, who are very different in their views but physically and psychologically healthy, were running, I wouldn’t post anything. After all, people in America have a right to vote for who they believe in.

However, when I see someone like Donald Trump demonstrating organic and functional deficits by not being able to focus, is tangential in his thinking, threatening revenge and prosecution against his enemies, and using crude language (“Kamala Harris is a sh-t Vice President.”) in a large public forum, which demonstrates a lack of normal mental boundaries, I need to speak up.

Whatever your position might be, I need you to recognize that Trump is suffering from psychophysiological deficits that he both denies and excuses. He is a danger as a would-be leader of the United States. I am concerned not only as a behavioral professional but as a former U.S. Marine Corps Officer who always looked to the President as someone to follow no matter whether he was from the Republican or Democratic party.

Naturally, I first and foremost support your right to vote for whomever you wish—that is what democracy and America is all about. However, if Trump does get elected and horrible things happen, saying “I didn’t know”—as some did in Germany after the holocaust—is not an option. This is a serious election. Someone who lies, brags, divides, and makes fun of those who are disabled, is not simply unpleasant…but psychologically deficient. If you are a Republican, you do have the choice of waiting until someone from your party who is healthy runs so your children and grandchildren, our country, and the world don’t suffer the horrible consequences of electing someone whose condition makes him vindictive and authoritarian—which are exaggerations of an inability to truly love another person or the spirit of democracy. In this seemingly close election, the choice is truly yours.
